can you please explain the units for both measurements of the Y axis
Sure. The vertical blue bars are the gross number of homicides in the US per year, as reported by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, published annually. The red line is the percentage of those homicides that result from gunfire, also a statistic provided by the report (but you have to calculate the percentage yourself, as I have).
